From October 11th to 13th, the CULTURGEST celebrates 30 years with a program that features: two concerts by Ricardo Toscano With Strings and Chasing Contradictions; the opening of the exhibition Fantasma Gaiata - A Coleção da CGD, curated by Bruno Marchand, which will later include some guided tours with audio description and Portuguese sign language; the opening of a new exhibition space whose first event, entitled Ideas, Projects and Involvements, will be dedicated to editions by the sculptor Alberto Carneiro; Finally, the night continues at the garage with Culturgest's 30th anniversary party, with a dj set by Pedro Ramos (Futura radio). Three nights to celebrate three decades of stories.
Schedule for the celebration of Culturgest's 30th anniversary
The celebration of Culturgest's 30th anniversary starts on Wednesday, October 11th, at 9:00 pm, with Ricardo Toscano's quartet concert, playing With Strings, by Charlie Parker, with the Portuguese Chamber Orchestra. In 1949 and 1950, Charlie Parker recorded a generous handful of standards pairing a jazz quartet with a classical string orchestra. Until then, there were two non-communicating worlds and this insistence cost the saxophonist some discredit within the jazz community. The fact that this adventure was a huge success with the public only helped many accuse Parker of opportunism. Over time, misunderstanding gave way to widespread recognition: today we know well the importance of this out-of-time audacity and how much the recordings that Charlie Parker made with strings shine.
Tonight, we see on stage some of the classics imagined by Charlie Parker played by a quartet led by Ricardo Toscano and the Portuguese Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Pedro Moreira. A concert that promises to mark a very special night, which ends with a drink in the foyer.
If on the night of October 11th Ricardo Toscano goes back in history, in the concert on October 12th we look at his recent creation, which is also entering its third decade in 2023. The artist brings Chasing Contradictions to the stage, the first album recorded as a trio and receiving numerous awards and praise at the end of 2022. By doing without the piano and, therefore, the quartet, Toscano created subtle spaces where other communications between the musicians can be felt. His compositions — but also a reinterpretation of Monk and a fadistic appropriation — build a solid body of music that once again demonstrates the maturity of his choices, options and criteria, as the Culturgest audience has already seen countless times. Chasing Contradictions is, for now, the most impressive testimony to the extraordinary value of Ricardo Toscano and his long-time partners in jazz.
On the night of Friday, October 13th, between 10pm and midnight, Culturgest opens its doors to two new exhibitions Fantasma Gaiata: A Coleção da CGD and Ideias, Projetos e Envolvimentos, by Alberto Carneiro.
A new exhibition space opens with editions dedicated to Alberto Carneiro in the space of the former Culturgest bookstore, which has now moved to the entrance hall, next to the cafeteria.
The space it previously occupied is now dedicated to free-entry exhibitions based on the broad idea of books and related notions such as editing, writing, documentation, inscription, paper, among others. Under the pretext of the presentation of O Canavial: Memória Metamorfose de um Corpo Ausente in the exhibition celebrating 30 years of Culturgest, the first moment of this new space is dedicated to editions by Alberto Carneiro (São Mamede do Coronado, 1937 - Porto, 2017). Among posters, catalogues, brochures, screen prints or books designed by Carneiro, the works gathered constitute the largest exhibition to date of this creative aspect of an artist who paid particular attention to all the declinations, developments and communication materials that his work experienced throughout the world. over the decades.
In the year in which it celebrates its thirtieth anniversary, Culturgest invites the public to rediscover the artistic centers that the Collection has brought together since its foundation, but also to discover the acquisitions made over the last three years in Fantasma Gaiata: a Coleção da CGD. The year 2021 marked the return of programmatic acquisitions for the Caixa Geral de Depósitos Collection – one of the most relevant collections of Portuguese contemporary art in the country. During this period, around a hundred works were incorporated, either through direct acquisitions or through the Acquisition Competition for Young Artists, reinforcing a collection that already had more than 1800 pieces.
Fantasma Gaiata - the CGD Collection proposes two distinct approaches to this growing body of works. Like two hemispheres of the same brain, each one specialized in certain functions and skills. Fantasma is dedicated to one of the great ambitions of sculpture: to erect bodies that mean and that last, that defy time, death, and oblivion. If the artist's body is permanently invoked as author, manufacturer, mirror or specter, the visitor's is summoned as measure, vehicle, witness – the place of all the senses. For its part, Gaiata is a playground, the playground of souls. It permeates conversations, alliances and challenges. Work groups come together around common interests. Others provoke and react to each other, fully invested in the game but oblivious to the results. More than reaffirming a collection, Fantasma Gaiata intends to celebrate the vital space that is established whenever we encounter works of art.
