The selection of the curatorial and exhibition project that will officially represent Portugal at the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia 2024, with a financial amount, is taking place until October 24, 2023, through a limited competition. total available amount of 385,000 (three hundred and eighty-five thousand euros).
The curators invited to present a proposal, Marta Mestre, Mónica de Miranda and Sandra Guimarães, were nominated by a Consultative Committee called Order of the Minister of Culture, constituted by Philippe Vergne, representing the Serralves Foundation, João Pinharanda, representing MAAT - Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, Emílio Rui Vilar, representing the Caixa Geral de Depósitos Foundation – Culturgest, Luísa Santos, representing AICA - Portuguese Section of the International Association of Art Critics and Margarida Mendes, on a proposal from the General Directorate of the Arts. The identification of the proposal to represent the Portuguese Pavilion will be carried out by an assessment committee made up of Paulo Carretas (senior technician at DGARTES), who coordinates, Ana Balona de Oliveira, André Tecedeiro and João Mourão (specialists).
Projects must relate to the theme “Foreigners Everywhere” proposed by Biennial curator Adriano Pedrosa, artistic director of the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) who is recognized for having a vision open to contemporary times, placing itself at a point of observation of the world that does not forget the nature of its origins.
Candidate proposals must also take into account objectives such as boosting the internationalization of Portuguese arts and culture through cooperation with other countries; valuing the educational dimension and raising awareness of culture through good public mediation practices; environmental sustainability and the implementation of good ecological practices; the promotion of artistic research and experimentation as innovative development and knowledge practices; promoting physical, social and intellectual accessibility for all professionals involved in artistic projects and their respective audiences.
The Official Portuguese Representation will be installed at Palazzo Franchetti during the 60th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia which will take place between April 20th and November 24th, 2024.
