Helena Almeida is an unmissable artist on the international contemporary art scene. Born in 1934, Lisbon, Portugal, the city where he lived and worked until September 2018. He studied Painting at the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes de Lisboa. His artistic practice encompasses photography, video and drawing, evolving from a permanent interrogation of the language of painting. The tendency towards anthropomorphization resulted in the use of his own body as an object or theme of painting, in a conceptualist approach. Although she always appears in front of the camera, the artist insists that her images are not self-portraits. The artist represented Portugal at the Venice Biennale on two occasions: 1982 and 2005. In 2004, she participated in the Sydney Biennale, Australia. Recently his work has been exhibited in important museums and galleries, such as: Galerie les filles du calvarie, Paris, France; John Hansard Gallery, Southampton, England; Fundación Telefónica, Madrid, Spain; Helga de Alvear, Madrid; Pinacoteca de São Paulo, Brazil; Kettle's Yard, University of Cambridge, England; Filomena Soares Gallery, Lisbon; Thomas Erben Gallery, New York, USA, and Tate Modern, London. A great retrospective of his work, entitled "My work is my body, my body is my work", was exhibited at the Serralves Museum in Porto (2015), in Paris (2016) and Brussels. In 2018 it was highlighted at Tate Modern, in London, in a space focused on the relationship between the individual and the work of art. On June 9, 2003, she was awarded the rank of Grand Officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique.
