The French Cinema Festival will hold its 24th edition from October 5th to 31st in 10 Portuguese cities, presenting more than 70 films of different genres and cinematographic styles. The Unreleased section is a program made up of 17 films, many of which either do not yet have commercial distribution assured in our country, or will be shown on video on demand. Therefore, the French Cinema Festival is the perfect moment to watch these new works on the big screen.
Director Jean-Baptiste Durand will be in Lisbon to present his first feature film Vira-Latas (Chien de la casse), a touching film that premiered this year in cinemas in France and was presented and awarded at several French festivals .
After its world premiere at the 60th edition of the Cannes Film Festival Critics' Week in 2021, where it won the GAN Foundation Broadcasting Prize, Feta screens the film Low Cost Generation (Rien à foutre) directed by Emmanuel Marre and Julie Lecoustre.
From director Cédric Klapisch ("The Spanish Residence", "Russian Dolls"), his most recent film, In the Body (En corps), is presented, about the dancer Elise, who, after an injury, discovers that she will never be able to dance more and find a new way of life.
In the documentary genre, Rookies (Allons enfants) directed by Thierry Demaizière and Alban Teurlai will be shown, which premiered at the 2022 Berlin Festival and follows a unique experience in a Paris school: compensating for school failure through hip-hop dancing; and Supremos - The Story of Suprême 93 NTM (NTM Suprêmes), a French-Belgian film directed by Audrey Estrougo, which was presented out of competition at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, about the French rap group Suprême NTM, focusing on mainly in the period from the creation of the group in 1988 until its first show at the Zénith in Paris in 1991.
Marinette, a 2023 biopic directed by Virginie Verrier about Marinette Pichon, one of the biggest stars in world football, will be shown for the first time in our country. This is the story of the life of a woman, a pioneer of French women's football, and follows her fight to raise awareness of women's rights in sport.
At the Festival there will also be time for historical films such as The Colors of Fire (Couleurs de l'incendie) a drama directed by Clovis Cornillac and the war film Blood Hero (Tirailleurs) directed by Mathieu Vadepied, which had its premiere at the official opening from Un certain regard at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival; and time for dramatic comedies such as The Power of Dialogue (Je verrai toujours vos visages) by Jeanne Herry, Zoe and Tempest (Tempête) by Christian Duguay, The Midwife (Sage-homme), directed by Jennifer Devoldere or Sweet Stars (À la belle étoile), by Sébastien Tulard, which is also part of the Cinema à Mesa section.
For more relaxed and good-natured sessions, the Festival also programs some comedies such as Grande Paris (Grand Paris) by Martin Jauvat, Little Great Victories (Les petites victoires) by Mélanie Auffret, a film that was presented at the international comedy film festival Alpe d'Huez 2023, where he won the Audience Prize and the Special Jury Prize, SOS: Save Our School (La Cour des miracles), by Hakim Zouhani and Carine May, a work that was part of the official selection of the Cannes Festival 2022 , A Happy Man (Un homme heureux) directed by Tristan Séguéla and Flying against the Wind (Sur la branche) by Marie Garel-Weiss.
The French Cinema Festival 2023 takes place from the 5th to the 31st of October in ten Portuguese cities: Lisbon, Almada, Oeiras, Coimbra, Porto, Évora, Beja, Viseu, Faro and Lagos.
