Who is Chloe Lamb?
Today, Chloë Lamb is a contemporary painter whose abstract oil paintings veer into the realm of figurative representation. Chloë Lamb attended the Heatherley School of Fine Art and studied with Robin Child at the Lydgate Art Research Centre. His style is influenced by the gestural and expressionist works of Richard Diebenkorn, Henri Matisse and Ivon Hitchens. Lamb builds his compositions through an improvised marking technique, in which each of his compositions is determined according to the shape and tone of the first mark he makes on the canvas. His vivid imagination takes shape through large brushstrokes, linear twists and turns, and rhythmic blocks of color. His aim is for viewers to take pleasure in the sensuality of his canvases, rather than seeking a deeper meaning behind them.
Chloë Lamb's method of painting
One of the most significant changes in 20th century art was when the artist sought to find rather than create an image. Finding meant that the artist sought to interpret the first abstract mark, color or shape he painted on canvas. This is an exciting and adventurous way of painting, which means that the artist cannot predetermine the painting's direction. Chloe Lamb has used this bold and flowing method, as all of her paintings demonstrate. His works are full of linear twists as he chases his imagination across the surface of the canvas. His sensitivity to color rhythms and his dynamic use of large brushes and cream paint lend his work a delightful quality, inviting the viewer to appreciate and participate in every action and nuance of color. Few artists can paint oil on oil like Chloe does with the palpable enrichment of the painted surface. The impact of his paintings is on two levels. It has an abstract feel to areas of color bounded by expressive lines that build shapes that come together in many unique ways to compose and block the image plane. On another level, one can read the tempting forms of a rich and sensual landscape that invites the observer to seek and appreciate the originality of the artist's poetic sensibility.
Passion for oil paint
Chloë Lamb, whether in large or small paintings, articulates her passion with the attributes of oil paint. When working instinctively with his materials, he finds inspiration in his pigments, in their ability to dilute a glaze or increase its density to an incredible dimension, and especially in the long drying time, which allows him to paint wet in wet - a technique that is difficult to master. . Lamb works on each piece until he sees it complete, somehow invoking those very attributes he admires so much.
Abstraction vs Figurative
Chloë Lamb is primarily an abstract painter, which is not to say that her work never veers towards representation. On the contrary, Lamb's observational leanings cause his work to remain slightly in the realm of representation. This could encompass a landscape (similar to a color field painting), with front, middle and background, a single cloud in an otherwise disjointed sky, or a tulip clearly rendered amidst soft close-ups of other flowers. Lamb also experimented with figurative painting, which keeps similar abstract elements but brings others into greater focus. It is in purer abstraction, however, that Lamb feels most at home.
