Banksy's surprising Valentine's Day mural exposes domestic violence as a grim reality ignored on the most romantic day of the year. The anonymous artist's new work surfaced overnight in Margate. Banksy unveiled a new mural highlighting the fight against domestic violence on Valentine's Day morning, drawing applause from fans across the world who praised the artist for not forgetting the reality of abuse on this supposedly romantic day. Entitled “Valentine's Day mascara”, the work appeared overnight on a white brick wall in the British city of Margate, one of the most economically deprived areas of Kent.
This mural depicts a woman dressed as a 1950s housewife throwing a man into an abandoned fridge, which Banksy created the work around. The woman in the blue plaid dress, apron and yellow rubber household gloves has a broken tooth and a black eye likely caused by a punch. The woman seems to be taking revenge on her attacker, while only his legs are visible, sticking out from the bottom of the fridge. The work was unveiled on the elusive artist's Instagram page on Tuesday morning and garnered over half a million likes within hours. Many left comments praising the artist for bringing attention to the issue.
Domestic violence levels have increased during the pandemic lockdowns, and the most recent Crime Survey for England and Wales estimated that 5% of adults aged 16 and over - 6.9% women and 3% men - have experienced domestic violence in the year ended March 2022, equivalent to 2.4 million adults. One of the users speculated that there were other hidden messages behind the work. “Anyone else notice the Ukrainian colors? I think that's the message."
