From the 2nd of September to the 15th of October, in Lisbon and Faro, the 4th edition of BoCA - Bienal de Artes Contemporâneas goes in search of the 'Invisible Present' by claiming bodies and gestures that are not visible.
In the more than 30 projects to be discovered, including commissions, world and national premieres, artists come together who venture into new creations, collaborations are designed that risk new languages, projects that shed light on the seams and the ghosts of the world, and that above all inspire us to invent possible ways of inhabiting the concreteness of the present.
This is the case of Paul B. Preciado, a mandatory thinker of queer theory, who is showing his first film “Orlando, my political autobiography” in a national premiere. At Culturgest, the philosopher also presents the challenging conference-performance “I am the monster that speaks to you”, also in its national premiere.
Commissioned and produced by BoCA, "The Talking Car" marks the debut of award-winning Polish visual artist Agnieszka Polska in theater creation, bringing together Albano Jerónimo, Vera Mantero, Iris Cayatte or Bartosz Bielenia on stage. With presentations at Culturgest (Lisbon) and Teatro das Figuras (Faro), BoCA plans a national and international tour.
Back in Portugal, Héctor Zamora presents his new creation, "Quimera". Paying homage to the migrant community and its workforce, which is almost always invisible to the eyes of others, the Mexican artist presents an action with balloons that form words, in the streets of Lisbon and Faro, in an allusion to the concept of chimera from the migrant perspective.
Also from Latin America, Gabriel Chaile, an artist from northern Argentina, conceives a large-scale installation for Praça do Carvão, at MAAT – a space where the matter, symbols and epistemologies of pre-Columbian cultures blended with the contemporary life. To visit during the weeks of the biennial, with three moments of performative activations.
Alongside international names such as Marina Herlop, Julian Hetzel, Ntando Cele or Yvonne Rainer, join Vera Mantero, Teresa Silva, João Pais Filipe and Marco da Silva Ferreira, Ana Borralho & João Galante, João dos Santos Martins, Herlander, Gaya de Medeiros or Cláudia Dias, some of the prolific artists of the national scene who enrich the 4th edition of BoCA with absolute premieres in the format of shows, performances, installations and concerts, not to be missed.
