Entitled “Women dressing women" ("Women who dress women", in the Portuguese translation), the exhibition will be on display at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) in New York, between December 7th and March 3rd, 2024, showing more of 80 objects that portray the work of the designers, including pieces by Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel, Sarah Burton, Ann Demeulemeester, Elizabeth Hawes, Jeanne Lanvin, Germaine Émilie Krebs, Miuccia Prada and Elsa Schiaparelli.
Among contemporary designers, the exhibition evokes Hillary Taymour (Collina Strada), Anifa Mveumba (Hanifa), Iris Van Herpen, Norma Kamali, Ester Manas, Jamie Okuma, Simone Rocha, Marine Serre, Yeohlee Teng and Isabel Toledo.
Designed to show the evolution of seamstresses from anonymity to the creation of brands bearing their name, the exhibition aims to "offer a new interpretation of the traditional canon of fashion history" and examine how the sector has been an instrument of social, financial autonomy and creative for women, highlights the statement.
The Met also states that the exhibition will reveal new data about the designers, aiming to "expand the canon of Western fashion by highlighting unusual pieces from the (Met) Institute of Fashion's collection".
