“Between the sky and the heart” is the title of the Portuguese artist’s exhibition Joana Vasconcelos created specifically for the Galleria degli Uffizi and the Pitti Palace, in Florence, Italy, from October 4th, and which will be on display until January 14th, 2024.
The museum's director, Eike Schmidt, expressed joy and pride for "hosting the first exhibition of Joana Vasconcelos in Florence", where many works of Renaissance art and architecture can be found. The exhibition will bring together a selection of large-format works and continues Vasconcelos' initiative to showcase the work of women artists, which began in 2016.
"I am a contemporary artist and I would never have dreamed of exhibiting alongside works by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo or Caravaggio. This invitation from the director of the 'Uffizi' is a great honor. Because, regardless of whether the artists are alive or dead, the most What is important is the dialogue that is generated between the works", explained the artist, in a note released by the museum.
The Galeria dos Ofícios is a palace that houses one of the oldest and most famous museums in the world, with rooms where works from the 12th century to the 18th century are arranged, in chronological order, including what is considered the best collection in the world of works from the Renaissance of artists such as Rafael, Titian, Rubens, Rembrandt, Canaletto and Sandro Botticelli, among others.
"The building itself is the framework for artistic production, regardless of the century it comes from. This space has the magical power to erase time, it's like a time machine. The most wonderful thing about the 'Uffizi' is the history of art ", added the artist in the press release.
