Museo Reina Sofía, FIDMarseille and Doclisboa present the second edition of this annual residency program aimed at filmmakers and artists working in the field of essay film, experimental cinema and, essentially, all the manifestations that constitute non-fiction cinema . This joint residency, organized by a museum and two international film festivals, allows you to articulate different phases between the idea and the realization of an audiovisual work. The program aims to support the conceptualization, development and production of cinematographic projects within the scope of non-fiction cinema, financing their execution and creating international debate networks.
The program pays tribute to Joaquim Jordà (1935-2006), a filmmaker with an original and emblematic work in the field of non-fiction and with a career that crosses the three countries of the institutions that organize this residency. Jordà was awarded the Spanish National Cinematography Prize (2006), his work is part of the Museo Reina Sofía Collection; the last retrospective dedicated to him at the end of his life was at FIDMarseille (2006); and one of his first films, Portogallo, paese tranquil (1969), focused on resistance against the dictatorship in Portugal. Jordà traced a nonconformist and committed path to creative documentary, characterized by the use of theatrical strategies and the mise en scène of deeply experimental narratives, which this competition seeks to recover and establish as a genealogy in contemporary non-fiction film.
The residency foresees three stages that include the research and development of the project and its production and circulation, and will take place in Madrid, Marseille and Lisbon.
Beneficiaries, two per year, will be automatically invited to participate in FIDLab and Doclisboa. FIDLab is an international co-production platform that takes place together with FIDMarseille, at the beginning of July, and which presents different projects candidate for financing and distribution. Projects awarded this Residency will be automatically evaluated by an independent panel from FIDLab and, even if they are not included among the selected projects, they will find professional opportunities offered by the platform.
In turn, Doclisboa offers artists in residence contacts among the guests of the festival, which takes place in Lisbon — in 2023, from the 19th to the 29th of October —, providing them with the opportunity to establish connections with international networks of filmmakers, artists and producers.
