The painting 'Construction', by Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, will go up for auction in December, in Paris, with an estimate of between 200 and 300 thousand euros, auctioneer Christie's announced today.
The 1.27 by 1.13 meter work, signed and dated by the artist, comes from a European collection after being acquired from the Applicat-Prazan Gallery, in Paris, and will be auctioned in person on December 6th. The auction is one of two for contemporary art - the other being online - and both have a global estimate of 8.5 million euros, according to a statement from Christie's. Among the artists represented are Serge Poliakoff, Georges Mathieu, Josef Síma, Zao Wou-ki, Richard Avedon, Peter Beard, Thomas Ruff, Sam Szafran, Robert Combas and David Hockney.
In the statement, Vieira da Silva appears as part of a group of works created by women, along with Germaine Richier, Etel Adnan and Anna-Eva Bergman. In July 2020, the oil painting "Tours d'arme", created in the same year by the Portuguese painter, was presented among works of art from the 20th century at a Christie's international auction, with an estimate of between 600 thousand and 800 thousand euros, but it was never sold.
In 2018, another work by Vieira da Silva, "L'Incendie 1", was auctioned in London, by the same auction house, for a record value for the artist of 2.290 million euros. Painted in 1944, it started with a base estimate of between 1.2 million euros and 1.6 million euros.
