A dress Princess Diana wore in 1985 sold for more than $1 million, making it the most expensive dress Diana ever wore.
The stunning velvet evening gown, an off-the-shoulder style typical of the 1980s and worn only twice by Princess Diana, sold at Julien's Auctions in Hollywood for $1,148,080, surpassing its pre-sale estimate of $ $100 thousand.
It set a record as the most expensive dress ever worn by Diana. The record previously belonged to a 1991 dress by Victor Edelstein, which sold in January for $604,800.
The dress, reminiscent of the night sky, features metallic star embroidery by designer Jacques Azagury. Diana wore several pieces by the Moroccan-British designer during her time in the royal family. The collector's item also features a two-tier royal blue organza skirt tied with a large sash and bow, said to be a tribute to her love of ballet, especially the English National Ballet.
Princess Diana first wore the low-waisted ballerina-style dress in 1985 in Florence, Italy, at a dinner during a royal tour with Prince Charles, and again at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 1986.
