The international contemporary art fair ARCOlisboa ended its sixth edition yesterday, with a record participation of galleries and more than 13,000 visitors, surpassing numbers recorded before the pandemic, the organization announced.
This year's edition, organized by IFEMA Madrid and Lisbon City Council, took place at Cordoaria Nacional and saw the participation of 86 galleries from 23 countries, an increase of 32% compared to the previous year "and breaking the record number of participants of its entire history", can be read in the press release.
The organization highlights the acquisitions by Lisbon City Council, which acquired 22 works by 10 artists: Andreia Santana (Galeria Filomena Soares), António Bolota (Galeria Vera Cortês), René Tavares (This is not a White Cube), Jorge Molder (Galeria Miguel Nabinho), Maria Trabulo (Galeria Presença), Luísa Jacinto (Quadrado Azul Galeria), Yonamine (Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art), Adriana Molder (Galeria 111), Dayana Lucas (Galeria Lehmann Silva) and Daniela Ângelo (Francisco Fino Galeria).
In turn, among the works acquired by the EDP Foundation are 15 pieces by artists Eugénia Mussa (Galeria Monitor), René Tavares (This is not a White Cube), Sara Chang Yan (Galeria Madragoa), Ana Manso (Galeria Pedro Cera ), Bruno Cidra (Galeria Bruno Múrias), Hugo Brazão (Balcony Gallery) and Maria Durão (Kubikgallery).
The ARCO Foundation, with the assistance of Manuel Segade and João Laia, also acquired works by the Brazilian artist Yuli Yamagata (Galeria Madragoa) and the Mexican artist Alejandra Venegas (Dürst Britt & Mayhew gallery), which will become part of the Fundação ARCO Collection, housed at the CA2M Dos de Mayo Art Center of the Community of Madrid.
Vieira de Almeida Sociedade de Advogados also reinforced its collection with the purchase of a work by Fernanda Fragateiro, to the Filomena Soares gallery. This year, the Opening Lisboa Prize was awarded to the Anca Poterasu gallery, from Bucharest, Romania.
The seventh edition of ARCOlisboa will take place from the 22nd to the 25th of May 2024, at Cordoaria Nacional.
