Now with the possibility of being able to produce face-to-face events, the organizers of art fairs have already started announcing the dates of the events. Venice Biennale in Italy — March 2022
The 59th edition of the first Art Biennial in the world will take place from April to November in a hybrid form. The chosen title was The Milk of Dreams (in Portuguese O Leite dos Sonhos), a reference to the book by the surrealist Leonora Carrington. Second, the newspaper Público,Portugal will have a new official home at the Venice Biennale as of 2022. The address remains that of a palace on the Grand Canal, but the space is larger and more practical for exhibitions of official representation of architecture or contemporary art.
Documenta Kassel, Germany —June 18th to September 25th, 2022
Documenta, which takes place in Kassel, Germany, is one of the main contemporary art exhibitions in the world. It takes place every five years, and in 2022 it will be held from June to September.Documenta is known for its exhibitions related to political and social themes. In this pandemic year, what will be the visions and connections presented by the artists? The artistic direction of this edition is the Indonesian group Ruangrupa, with the expected inclusion of new names from the international art scene.
ARCOmadrid, in Spain — February 23 to 27, 2022
The ARCOmadrid international contemporary art fair will take place from the 23rd to the 27th of February 2022. This year, the fair will again present a carefully curated selection of national and international galleries in its different programs.
ARCOlisboa, in Portugal — May 19, 2022
In its fifth face-to-face edition, which takes place between the 19th and the 22nd of May, Cordoaria hosts the contents of more than 70 galleries selected by the Organizing Committee and by the teams of curators from the different sections. This fair promises to convert the Portuguese capital into a meeting point for collectors, gallery owners and artists and art professionals from all over the world. The main axis of the Fair, the General Programme, will be composed of national and international galleries, whose artistic proposals the focus on the quality of the contents. In addition, ARCOlisboa will leverage its two main organized sections: África em Foco, with the participation of galleries from the African continent, and Opening Lisboa, centered on young galleries, with the aim of providing the fair with new content and investigations.
The Armory Show, in the United States of America — September 9 to 11, 2022
In 1994, four New York art dealers had the ambitious goal of creating a new art fair to support artists and attract global attention. The result was a groundbreaking cultural moment that has become vital to the New York art market and beyond. Though much has changed over the years, the Armory Show remains a force in the art world and essential to New York culture.
art Basel, naSwitzerland — 16 to 19 June, 2022
Art Basel was founded in Basel, Switzerland, in 1970 by a group of local gallery owners, and has since become a staple in the art world, with successful satellite editions in Miami and Hong Kong. While not the oldest contemporary art fair, Art Basel is now the largest and has set the standard for contemporary art exhibitions around the world. The fair takes place over a period of five days in June in Basel (and usually in December in Miami and March in Hong Kong). The event is a combination of art exhibitions, colloquiums and book signings.
Freeze Art Fair, in England — 12 to 16 October 2022
In 2003, the editors of ``Frieze'' magazine created the Freeze Art Fair. This one takes place in October and features work from nearly 200 contemporary galleries around the world. Works are displayed in three sections: the main Galleries section, a Focus section that highlights young galleries, and finally, one with participatory works. One of Frieze's most popular events is the series of sculpture projects that are commissioned on the fairgrounds each year. Freeze New York (satellite fair) debuted at Randall's Island in 2011 and has also been hugely successful.
