Taking place between October 19th and December 3rd in the cities of Porto and Matosinhos, the third edition of the Porto Design Biennale will have as its central theme "Being Water: How we flow and shape ourselves collectively", enhancing the meeting of national and international organizations in a debate about one of the most essential and indispensable natural elements: Water. Under the curatorship of Fernando Brízio, the set of exhibitions, conferences, workshops and publications that form the programmatic structure of the Porto Design Biennale, aims to be an incubator of answers to the complex challenges that society faces, continually working to shape to more sustainable, equitable, free and happy futures.
Under the theme proposed for this edition, the Open Call for Projects is open for the parallel programming of the Porto Design Biennale. Running until June 26th, it invites designers, architects, artists and cultural agents to present projects that explore different forms of action in the form of debates, workshops, publications, interventions, among others. Projects that propose critical interpretations of the general theme of this edition, that manage to rethink traditional formats of public presentation and that expand the scope of audiences reached and the ways of interacting with them will be valued. For this purpose, monetary support is granted in a total amount of 60 thousand euros. The regulations can be consulted on the event website.
The Porto Design Biennale 2023 seeks to be a platform for dialogue between civil society, academia, industry, institutions and national and international cultural agents. With a commitment to the territory and local identities, and valuing manufacturing and materiality, the Porto Design Biennale configures an exercise in thinking with a broad spectrum and involvement, starting from the local context and dynamics to generate speculation and debate about issues of global scope.
The first edition of the event mobilized around 50,000 people over 81 days, in a vast program that integrated around 300 projects and 60 events. The 2021 edition, held during the Covid-19 pandemic, demonstrated the resilience and adaptability of the event, which mobilized hundreds of people around a diverse and creative program, under the theme Alter-Realities and the pertinent epithet Draw the gift.
The Porto Design Biennale is promoted by the municipalities of Porto and Matosinhos and organized by esad—idea.
